National Sandwich Day is Sunday. Here are 5 deals to celebrate in metro Detroit

While November brings thoughts of the Thanksgiving holiday, this weekend begins with a nod to the beloved sandwich.

Sunday officially marks National Sandwich Day. It’s a day to honor the assembly of any kind of filling – meat, cheese, vegetables and more – between two slices of bread of any kind.

In honor of the sandwich, fast-casual restaurants are offering free or discounted sandwiches.

But first, who invented the sandwich?

Although it is not clear how the sandwich originated, many sources point to an English nobleman. John Montagu, born November 3, 1718 in England and 4th Earl of Sandwich, is credited with inventing the sandwich in 1762.

The story goes that Montagu was known as a card player and gambler. So fond of card games, Montagu did not want to be taken away from the games, not even to eat. And so, he asked the servants to put any meat prepared between two slices of bread to hand and bring it to him, so that he would not miss a handful.

However, an earlier reference of the sandwich comes from the stories of Hillel the Elder, a rabbi who suggested a form of sandwich for Passover, placing lamb and bitter herbs between pieces of unleavened matzah bread.

Honoring Metro Detroit Sandwiches

Deal or no deal, National Sandwich Day is a good opportunity to remember your favorite metro Detroit sandwich or famous sandwich restaurant. Places in metro Detroit have plenty of distinctive sandwiches to offer. There are Berlin-style döner kebab sandwiches served at Supergeil in Corktown to beef sandwiches at many area delis, including Ann Arbor’s famous Zingman’s Deli. And let’s not forget notables like the Shawarma sandwiches from Bucharest Grill and the sub sandwiches from Gonella stacked with meat and cheeses.
