Woman hospitalized after Santa Rosa house catches fire

A house near the Santa Rosa Junior College campus caught fire Thursday, according to officials.

A woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after her home caught fire Thursday afternoon in Santa Rosa.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department responded around 4:46 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from a home on Nason Street near Beaver Street in the Santa Rosa Junior College neighborhood, the agency said in a news release.

Firefighters, who arrived within three minutes, found thick black smoke billowing from the front windows and roof line of the single-story single-family home.

Crews extinguished the flames, which were in the front living room, within 10 minutes.

The home was empty, but crews learned a woman was home at the time and were evacuated after she tried to put out the fire. She was evaluated by EMTs for smoke inhalation and taken to the hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the fire was accidental and electrical in nature, officials said.

Heavy black smoke left the home uninhabitable, causing an estimated $305,000 in damage to the home and its contents, according to the release.
