GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It’s Halloween night, which means plenty of families have spent part of the evening trick-or-treating, or in this case, trick-or-treating.

Save a Life a Day hosted a delicious event as it aims to provide A Path Forward to a safe haven for area children and young adults. Their goal: to give kids the chance to dress up and celebrate Halloween when they might not otherwise be able to.

According to Jasmine Cummings, co-founder of Save a Life a Day, this chest or treat is designed to meet children where they are. “Those terrible years when you’re trying to figure it all out, we want to provide those tools or get them in the places of development that they need to be able to succeed,” Cummings said.

Donshay Lewis, involved with Save a Life a Day, was one of the children he now hopes to help. “We’re here basically giving candy to kids, trying to stop gun violence,” Lewis said.

Lewis is a father to his four boys and has big dreams for all of them. “I want my boys to go to school, graduate, go to college and do something with their lives,” Lewis said.

Lewis wants to see other young people in the community succeed. “Being a father, I love seeing kids in the community,” Lewis said. “I like to see them do well.”

The first step to getting it right is, on Halloween night, letting these kids be kids, which means handing out as much candy as possible!

The holiday festivities don’t stop with Halloween. On Dec. 20, Save a Life a Day is holding its 10th annual Christmas event at Gerald R. Ford Middle School.
