Halloween Safety in Posey County

Halloween Safety in Posey County

POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Some parents say they’re forgoing the door trick or enjoying other scary events for safety reasons.

Posey County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeremy Fortune says deputies are seeing fewer tricks when they’re on patrol.

“I grew up in a very small town and would go to the same houses 2 or 3 times. And you know it was a different atmosphere back then. I think there is a lot of uncertainty in society now about who to trust and who not to trust and who is safe and not safe.”

Instead, he says more families dress up and go to chest or treat events like this one at the Mount Vernon Fire Station.

Firefighters, police officers and other first responders handed out hundreds of bags to superhero princesses and even Scooby Doo.

Cody and Alexandria Schroeder’s family dressed up as Velma Fred Daphne and Scooby Doo. They say such events are a safer alternative.

“Oh absolutely. Things like that. Instead of going door to door. Especially for younger children. He doesn’t have to stay out all night.”

Fortune’s chief deputy says there’s nothing wrong with going door-to-door, but encourages parents to take precautions before kids eat candy.

“What you should look for is open packaging; partially opened wrappers never take candy that is not in a sealed wrapper or container,” says Fortune.

Asked about drugs in candy, Fortune said it’s been a few years since an incident was reported, but he encourages parents to remain vigilant.
