Why a Martin County high school teacher is now in jail

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A Martin County High School teacher is in custody and facing drug-related charges.

The teacher, Christopher Morin, 45, faces charges of unlawful use of a two-way communication device and possession with intent to deliver illegal drugs.

According to a Martin County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, Morin was found Wednesday night in possession of 3.3 grams of methamphetamine, 24.7 grams of GHB and several syringes.

Martin County High School Principal Cristina Selvidge sent a message to parents and staff Thursday announcing her arrest.

“While the allegations against Mr. Morin are in no way related to the students or our campus, they are extremely serious and fundamentally out of alignment with the high standards of conduct and ethics that our school and the Martin County School District expect of all educators and staff . Selvidge said.

The school principal said that if Morin is released from prison, he will not have access to any part of our campus or any other school district property where he may encounter students.

Selvidge described the arrest as “deeply disappointing” and “painful”.

“We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment and maintain zero tolerance for any behavior that does not meet these expectations,” Selvidge said.

The principal ended the message to parents by saying they could contact her if they had questions or concerns about Morin’s arrest.

Below is the full message sent to parents regarding the arrest:

Hello Martin County High School families and staff.

This is Mrs. Selvidge calling to inform you of the recent arrest of one of our teachers, Christopher Morin.

Mr. Morin was charged with unlawful use of a two-way communication device and possession with intent to deliver illegal drugs.

While the allegations against Mr. Morin are in no way related to the students or our campus, they are extremely serious and fundamentally out of alignment with the high standards of conduct and ethics that our school and the Martin County School District expect of all educators and staff. Please know that as the legal process unfolds, we will remain vigilant.

If Mr. Morin is released from prison, he will not have access to any part of our campus or any other school district property where he may encounter students. The safety and well-being of our students is and will always be our highest priority.

Our school district maintains strict ethical and legal standards for employee conduct, not only during work hours, but also in personal conduct. It is deeply disappointing and painful to be faced with a situation where an educator’s actions have led to this outcome.

We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment and maintain zero tolerance for any behavior that does not meet these expectations. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 772-219-1800.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of Martin County High School.
