Matt LaFleur respects Texans CJ Stroud avoids comparing Jordan Love

to play

GREEN BAY – A day after his team’s 34-13 win against the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur addressed the media Monday afternoon. Here are some brief highlights of the conversation:

Matt LaFleur doesn’t get into comparisons between Jordan Love and CJ Stroud

With the Houston Texans traveling to Lambeau Field on Sunday, two of the best young quarterbacks in the league will share the field.

It seemed like everyone around the league wanted to compare Jordan Love to Texans quarterback CJ Stroud as both transcended to star status last season. LaFleur said he hasn’t studied Stroud long enough to offer a worthwhile comparison.

“I just think they’re young quarterbacks capable of making all the throws,” LaFleur said. “That’s probably a better question for someone other than me. I’m not sitting there studying CJ like that. I haven’t had until, this is our first chance to go against him, but I have a lot of respect for him and what he to be able to do a year ago just to be able to come into the league as a young player and put up the kind of numbers he did and lead them to the playoffs I think was pretty impressive.”

Like Love, Stroud is surrounded by a plethora of playmakers. The Texans have a trio of receivers with at least 20 receptions in six games in Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell. They also have a veteran and talented tight end in Dalton Schultz.

“I try to avoid comparisons,” LaFleur said. “I know they have a lot of great players who have been doing it at a high level for a long time.”

Packers know they’re in a crowded NFC North even early in the 2024 season

The NFC North became the first NFL division since realignment in 2022 to have all four teams win at least four games through the first six weeks. Even though there is a lot of season left to play, the NFC North has arguably been the best division in the league.

Within the division, the Packers have only played the undefeated Minnesota Vikings, losing to them in Week 4 at home. LaFleur said he hasn’t studied the Chicago Bears or Detroit Lions, but he watched Chicago’s win Sunday in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit’s blowout against the Dallas Cowboys later in the day.

“Seeing Chicago do what they did and being familiar with them,” LaFleur said, “it looks like they’re starting to have an offense now. And that defense is one of the best defenses in the league. And then look at what Detroit did last night, so you get a chance to see these teams compete. Detroit, they’re loaded in every phase. So, I think there’s a lot of good teams in our division right now. It’s going to be interesting when we all start playing each other.”

Matt LaFleur thinks Packers have put Romeo Doubs situation ‘behind us now’

The Packers’ four wins this season have all come in adverse weeks. The first two were with backup quarterback Malik Willis after Jordan Love was sidelined with a sprained medial collateral ligament. The last two came as the team was dealing with the suspension of catcher Romeo Doubs for conduct detrimental to the team, and Doubs’ return to the field.

LaFleur said he was pleased with how his locker room rallied around Doubs last week.

“I think our guys,” LaFleur said, “will continue to support each other, and they should. They spend a lot of time together. It’s like anything in life. If you have a problem or whatever, something that happens in your family, it’s not like you just deny your family, you’ll find a way through it, and I’m proud of our guys and all of us collectively, Roma, everybody finds a way through it . I think that’s behind us.”
