Ross County defender Akil Wright looks to make a last third impact with goal scored after a fine start to life at Dingwall

Akil Wright has been on target for the first time in his career after finding the net twice for Ross County this season.

The summer signing from Stockport County scored twice in as many games against St Johnstone and Dundee last month, showing he can be an aerial threat going forward and also solid at the back.

His most prolific campaign to date saw Wright score six goals, so this season he will be looking to at least approach that tally after hitting the ground running in Dingwall.

“Having goals all over the pitch will undoubtedly be very important for us,” he stressed.

“I probably should have scored more. In the last two seasons it’s been two, so I’m there.

“Hopefully I can get a lot more than that this season. The most I’ve got is six, so I’m definitely hoping to get a few more.

“Until now I’ve never had a goal! I’ll probably aim for five, that’s probably realistic.”

Wright’s goal return was just a testament to the early form that has already made him a fan favorite among the Staggies faithful.

By his own standards, however, there is more to come, which will be music to the ears of County fans.

“For me personally, I probably didn’t quite do it in the first two games, certainly not as well as I know I can be,” Wright explained.

“As time goes on, I will show more of what I can do and there is still more to come, I definitely believe that.

“I feel I have good attributes, both physical and technical to play in this league and I know I have to play to my strengths, but at the same time I have to make sure I’m getting the basics right defensively.

“There’s no ease, if you will, in this league. Anyone can beat anyone, it seems. There’s no team you go up against thinking ‘it’s three points.’

“Everyone is capable of winning a game and the margins are very small. It’s definitely different than what I’m used to, in that sense.”

Wright has been a fixture for Ross County since he was 11 since signing for the club, only missing the League Cup second round defeat at home to Spartans.

As a result, he is starting to build those crucial partnerships at the back with the likes of Kacper Lopata and Ryan Leak, who have often lined up alongside him in defence.

He feels that each man with a slightly different style of play can only be a good thing, and he’s certainly enjoying his experiences so far.

“Kacper is very dominant,” added Wright.

“He’s only 23 so he’s got years on me but he’s come on straight away and set his game up in the back three and has really impressed.

“He’s confident and very vocal, and that helps the guys. He helps me and Ryan Leak a lot with our communication.

“To some extent, that takes the pressure off me as a more experienced defender, but at the same time I also have to use my experience to show them at certain times how to manage a game.”
