Scott Allan reacts to suggestion Brendan Rodgers’ “excellent” signing could be Celtic’s next captain

Celtic have had a number of captains over the years who have been responsible for motivating and sometimes dragging the team to incredible achievements over the years.

Billy McNeill is arguably the greatest Celtic captain ever. Leading a team full of Scotsmen to beat Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup will never be topped. At least not in my life.

However, Celtic have still had the likes of Scott Brown overseeing a second nine in a row and a treble quadruple.

Callum McGregor led Celtic to their eighth domestic treble and Tom Boyd also led Celtic to their first treble since the Jock Stein era in 2001.

The point is that managing Scotland’s most successful club takes a certain kind of character and when it was suggested to Scott Allan that one of Brendan Rodgers’ summer signings could be a potential successor to Callum McGregor.

The ‘excellent’ Luke McCowan as potential Celtic captain

A Celtic fan suggested to Allan that Luke McCowan could go on and lead Celtic after McGregor, the former Celtic midfielder says the influence of the new summer signing is already serving him well.

Allan told Superscoreboard: “I think we’re looking a long way off, but what I would say is I think the impact he’s had off the bench has been excellent considering how strong Celtic are at the moment.

“I think his influence on the game, he has great energy, composed on the ball on Sunday, a bit of class with the pass against St Johnstone. So it’s off to a great start.

“It’s more a case of being consistent that he can train well with Brendan Rodgers because I know that’s what he’s looking at.”

Luke McCowan bet on Celtic ‘longevity’

The only issue facing McCowan at Celtic at the moment is winning a regular starting spot, but Allan feels that will not be a problem for the former Dundee captain as he believes he is at Parkhead for the long term.

Allan continued: “And when he gets that chance early on, is he going to keep his shirt? Ultimately, he has to be better than Hatate, Engels and at some point, Bernardo, and that’s very difficult.

“These guys, the player negotiation model that Celtic have, they want to move them maybe a year, two years from now for a big fee.

“And he might just be one of the players with a little bit of longevity that when they move on, he could come in and fill one of the slots and really take the bull by the horns.”

McCowan has made four appearances so far and has already opened his goalscoring account for Celtic in the win against Hearts this season.

Helping to change Brendan Rodgers’ game in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Ross County, McCowan’s influence at Parkhead is clear as he signals his intention that he is not just here to make up the numbers.

Can the 26-year-old become Celtic’s next captain? It is too early to make any kind of judgment as McCowan must be allowed to settle in and find his feet at the club.
