Man found guilty of defrauding UConn of more than ,000

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – A man has been found guilty of defrauding UConn with stolen bank information and fake names.

The man was Dickson Alorwornu, 35, a citizen of Ghana who lives in Greenwich. He is also known as “Dixon Al”.

Officials said Alorwornu used other people’s names, fake Social Security numbers and fake email addresses to submit two applications for non-degree programs at UConn.

According to trial evidence, in December 2017, Alorwornu used stolen American Express cards to fund the two student accounts with more than $62,000 in fraudulent funds.

In January 2018, officials said Alorwornu withdrew from classes and asked for a refund of the money he had deposited with the university.

UConn later transferred tens of thousands of dollars to bank accounts that Alorwornu controlled, according to the suit.

The investigation revealed that the email accounts he used to defraud UConn were also used to commit fraud at other universities.

The jury found Alorwornu guilty of two counts of wire fraud. Judge Sarala V. Nagala scheduled him for sentencing on February 19.

Alorwornu was released on $50,000 bail pending his sentencing.
